About Poorbita

Rooted here.
Growing together.

A people-centred movement for education, dignity and sustainable opportunity across rural West Bengal.

Our story

Development begins with dignity.

Egra Agriculture and Rural Development Society (EARDS) is a registered non-profit founded by professionals committed to people-centred development. Since 2006, the organisation has worked across West Bengal with children, adolescents, women, artisans, farmers and senior citizens who face social and economic exclusion.

Its public initiatives are brought together under the name Poorbita. The work links child education and nutrition with health, women’s empowerment, skill development, traditional craft, sustainable agriculture and community awareness—because lasting change rarely comes from addressing one need in isolation.

Where we work

Three centres. One shared purpose.

Three Poorbita Rural Development and Craft Centres serve communities at Sarpukurdanga and Sehalai in Birbhum, and Jadabganj in Purba Bardhaman. The Poorbita Kishalay programme currently works in four tribal-dominated areas: Uttar Sehalai, Sarpukurdanga, Mala and Jadabganj.

Across these locations, local educators and practitioners help bridge linguistic, educational and economic barriers with culturally sensitive support.

Vision

Every child learning, nourished and able to thrive.

We envision inclusive, holistic child development in which quality education and nutritious food provide the foundation for a healthier and brighter future.

Mission

Skills and learning that break the cycle of poverty.

We empower underprivileged adolescents and women—especially from tribal communities—through livelihood skills, while helping every child enroll, remain in school and move toward a future with zero dropouts.

Our values

How we hold ourselves accountable.

These principles shape decisions, partnerships and our responsibility to the communities we serve.

01

Accountability

We work with integrity, take responsibility for outcomes and communicate honestly about both progress and setbacks.

02

Excellence

We remain curious, challenge assumptions and keep improving the quality and relevance of our work.

03

Respect

We listen openly and treat every person, culture and point of view with dignity.

04

Trust

We believe in one another’s potential and create space to share experience, responsibility and learning.
